In 1938, Swiss chemist Albert Hofmann began exploring compounds derived from lysergic acid while working at Sandoz Laboratories.

Initially overlooked, one particular compound—LSD-25—was revisited five years later. Curious about its unusual properties, Hofmann synthesized it again in 1943 and unknowingly became the first person to experience its effects.

His famous bicycle ride home would become one of the most iconic moments in scientific history.
